When that didn’t work I tried Disk Utility which sees it as “3 TB WD My Book 1140” and shows it’s mounted but a while ago I renamed the drive “Backup Drive” on a single partition and that is grayed out below the main drive name. I’m not sure what the difference is between these to but the renamed partition appears to be a sub-heading (grayed out and unmounted) under the factory name (which looks mounted but apparently isn’t).
